Missouri Election Results

Missouri is one of the most populated states in the United States of America and is situated in the Midwest of the country. Having a mix of urban and rural cultures, Missouri election results have so far been an accurate predictor of who the next president of America would be. An exception was made in the 2008 presidential election when the Republican party candidates had a majority over the Democratic Party candidates by 0.1%. Although a seemingly negligent amount, the Missouri elkection results show how closely divided the nation was about the election.

Missouri is well known as a bellwether state in American politics. That is, Missouri has the highest number of times of having supported the national winner of the Presidential race in the country in every election since 1904, and so Missouri election results are historically considered to be an accurate representation of what the presidential race will end up as. The only two occsaions this did not happen was in the election of 1956 when Eisenhower won, and in 2008 when Obama won. It would be no surprise then that Missouri election results are looked at very carefully by the candidates and also by those who predict the outcomes of any election.

Missouri election results play an important role in the presidential, and any other election as well. As one of the most populated states in America, the voting public of Missouri plays a vital role in selecting who would serve them as the new president. This role is something that cannot be taken lightly, the same way that voting cannot and should not be taken lightly. The responsibility we have towards society, our country and out future generation is shown in the choices we make today in any election. But it finally boils down to each one of us, as we all have the power to make the change we want in today’s world.

Lying With Statistics – Politics as Usual

Lying with statistics has always been part of politics, but it has perhaps become more prevalent as we have become more mathematically illiterate as a people. In fact, 65.7% of statistic are just plain false. Okay, I invented that one – but to make a point. One of the easiest ways to lie with statistics is to make them up. Being “precise” makes them more believable too, which is why I didn’t round that off to 67%.

Watch for unrealistically precise figures when you read or here statistics. Nobody can actually say to the nearest hundredth of a percent how overweight a population is, for example, or exactly how many homeless people there are. But what else should you watch for?

Here’s an small example pulled from a magazine I was reading. The May 2008 issue of Sierra Magazine had a small piece on the “hyper-consumptive, carbon spewing ways” of Western countries,” with the following quote: “Stephen Pacala, director of the Princeton Environmental Institute, claims that the planets richest 700 million people – a mere 7% of the world’s population – are responsible for half of the global greenhouse-gas emissions produced by fossil fuels.” Notice that if 700 million is 7% of the world’s population, we suddenly have 10 billion people in the world. The actual figure was about 6.7 billion as of 2008.

That kind of mistake is common in reporting. It is most likely a simple error, but on the other hand, it seems that the mistaken figures are often better for making the desired point than the true ones would be. It is bad enough if 10.3% of the world’s people produce over half of carbon emissions, but politically a stronger point if a mere 7% do. Watch for this kind of common mistake and/or manipulation of the statistics.

For another example of lying with statistics, watch election reporting. More than once I’ve seen the vote percentages given for the Republican and Democratic candidates add up to 100% in major elections – even presidential elections. Of course for that to be true there would have to be no votes for any other candidates. In reality, other parties often get several percent of the votes. What the news organizations are apparently reporting then, is the votes that they think matter. This kind of manipulation gives the impression that there are no other political parties, but there were a dozen that ran presidential candidates last time I voted.

Be careful too of the more subtle lying with statistics. For example, let me ask you a question: If a company’s profits go from 3% to 6%, did they rise 3% or 100%? Profits did double, which is a rise of 100%, but as a return on equity they moved only from 3% to 6%, which still leaves a poor rate of return compared to most industries.

How this is reported depends on the political slant of the news organization. If they want to attack the company for making too much money, they can write a headline that says; “XYZ Company sees 100% Increase In Profits!” Technically it is an accurate statement, but it hides a lot of truth, doesn’t it?

Lying with statistics is perhaps most evident in opinion polls. In this case, the manipulation of the truth is accomplished by the way in which questions are phrased. If a thousand people were asked, “Should the government help people who face losing their homes to foreclosure?” the number of people for such a program would certainly be higher than if a thousand were asked, “Should you be forced to pay more taxes to help people make the payments on their houses?” Notice that both accurately describe what the program would do.

As you watch the evening news or read newspapers and news magazines, stop at each statistic they throw out there. Ask if it is likely to be accurate, and how it was arrived at. Ask if it tells the whole truth, and what other ways things could be measured. Get online and look for other information. Lying with statistics will continue, but being fooled by them is optional.

Americans Not Prepared for a Long Crisis

Americans have always been an energetic and optimist people. The vastness of the American landscape and the attraction of being able to make it big with a lot of hard work and a little luck attracted the restless and disenfranchised from around the world. Despite imperfections America was and remains an energetic mix of one ethic group after another in pursuit of their own personalized American dream.

That restless spirit imported to and bred in America likes and expects fast results, not only from their own efforts but from their politicians and government. Long term solutions to problems of any sort are not favored in America. Americas want, even demand, that problems not matter how complex be fixed fast. Like right now.

More articles about the Long Crisis

As evidence of the American fixation on fast results just look at the Obama government’s effort to fix the economy. An economic system that has imploded due to the use of excessive debt and financial leverage by the public as well as the private sector is being primed for a quick fix by adding even more debt and leverage. Probably some short term improvement will occur in some areas at the expense of greater than necessary pain, pronounced disaster, in the future.

Many hopeful mainstream economists are still predicting a rapid V recovery, others a bit slower U recovery. The prospect of a long crisis and a L shaped depression, similar to the path experienced by Japan, is a minority view. It is a view that few Americans can easily accept. After all, isn’t the US government on the case? Are they not spending trillions and trillions of dollars to “save” our economy and the American way of wasteful life?

Indeed they are and that is adding to the breakdown of the world’s financial system. A system built on the premise that debt is money does not function very well when the debt burden becomes so large that it can no longer be repaid. The typical American is hopeful that any crisis will be short lived but they are not stupid. They realize that they have reached the point where savings and paying down debt is a far wiser course than continuing to spend money they don’t have.

More articles about the Long Crisis

The deflationary forces of the depression that we are in now, however, are so great that for many Americans the reduction in wealth caused by tanking real estate values, a stock market that even with a fantastic March rally is still 40% plus off its high, and an end to easy credit, is leading to record bankruptcy rates.

Most Americans are still not willing to believe that the crisis could and probably will go on for many years. Their natural optimism leads Americans to believe that by the end of this year, certainly in early 2010, happy motoring days will be here again.

Even those who believe that we have to rebuild our financial system from the ground up and that the process will take many years before the economy will fully recover can not imagine an America where living standards are reduced by up to 50%. Americans are not prepared to work through a long crisis even when it is becoming increasingly obvious that a long crisis is what we are faced with and that we can not return to the cheap energy days upon which American wealth was build.

The collapse of the commercial real estate market and the closing of large regional malls will be a horrible shock to Americans. The spread of shanty towns across the nation and the sad plight of former middle class people who are now homeless will be poison to the American mindset. The frustration, anger, and grief that will follow will be a danger to every politician at the local, state, and federal level.

The long crisis will bring many changes within America that we are absolutely not prepared for. In near future articles I’ll discuss some of the changes that will be forced upon us like it or not and how Americans may react.

Election Returns

During the 2008 presidential election polls in the USA, electronic media, especially the Internet, played a leading role in bringing the election results to the national and international viewers.  The leading companies such as MSNBC, CNN and ABC News had record-breaking visits by viewers to their websites.  Election returns had generated such enthusiasm both at home and abroad.

election returns

On the election night in the USA, the figures had it that over seventy million people had viewed election returns on cable television and webs.  The contest between Democrat Barack Obama and republican John McCain for the presidency had generated such intense interest in the people that every viewership record has been broken.

There is absolutely no doubt that people used cable TV and websites of leading news companies to watch election returns though the Nielsen Media research don’t have the full viewership figures on both media.  However, an estimated over 47 million people followed the results on TV, bringing that figure to be the highest recorded so far in the annals of the American president polls.

Top sites such as Yahoo News recorded a boost in traffic to their sites on this historical day in the USA.  This is a clear improvement of the viewership over the previous election days.  Nielsen monitored the viewership of 14 networks that broadcast election returns.  It was record breaking for almost all the electronic media companies in the history of their existence.

Apart from the cable TV and websites that were broadcasting and streaming 2008 presidential election returns live on their medium of transmission, still other websites catered to the viewership with data on previous elections.  These data were available in the form of maps, statistical reports, and election returns mostly in PDF formats. These data were of use in comparing 2008 US presidential election results with those of past elections.

I was rumored that Senator Obama was unwilling to watch election return on cable TV.  The reason was that he was averse to listening to cable TV chatter.  However, this did not prevent his followers from resorting to the electronic media to watch election returns of the US presidential elections 2008 where Obama emerged the winner with a clear margin.  People seem to have cared less about this trait in Barack Obama when voting for him.

Although with the problem lying in the very bottom people try to seek results looking at it as an overview committing many misunderstandings . Sometimes it is in the counties in United Kingdom, and sometimes it is in the states of United States of America or maybe a small province that those problems could be solved. It would be a wiser idea to practice certain kinds of elections in these smaller patricians of a country.

A local election could be of many types. In USA it could be the elections held in separate states. In electing a mayor there could be no other better method than a local election . The presidential election is also a combination of all the local votes provided by each and every state . To get the best person suitable it is believed that local votes are the best option. Local election ensures the impact of all kinds of people rather than the majority.

In United Kingdom however local elections became a landmark allowing even 18-20 years to also be a candidate for council seats. Council elections in UK are held with great interest. Internet and telephone voting were common in getting the local election results . With the results it was obvious that in almost all the districts the councils have achieved a different result to the overall general elections and hence regarded as a giving more authority on the people living in the area to choose their councilors.

In Middle East however the local elections are used to deal with the water supply and power and etc. The idea is to separate the units who practice the orders given by higher authorities.

As the most popular local election London mayor election stands out to be very attractive to many people around UK. One of the bigger landmarks of this event is the winning of Conservatives Boris Johnson in 2008.

T-shirts, in essence, are considered casual wear.  Several kinds of t-shirts are to be sold in the marketplace presently.  Collarless, sleeveless, and button less t-shirts are some of them.  Contrary to the past, globally, businessmen with creative talents are using t-shirts as a means of advertisement to publicize their wares.  Election t-shirts are such a result of creativeness

Just as we found t-shirts with various logos, pictures, cartoon characters, slogans, humorous messages, pithy sayings, and what not, nowadays it has been introduced into electioneering too.  Or else is it vice versa?  However, it is the done thing nowadays to utilize t-shirts for one’s electioneering to secure maximum number of ballots  In times of presidential elections of 2008 in the United States, election t-shirts of chief candidates were to be seen in all places.

The supporters of Barack Obama and John McCain wore t-shirts with their candidate’s picture on them.  Several party men had worn t-shirts with the name of the state and the candidate’s image.  These election t-shirts had catchphrases and sentences on them.  Some creative minds had put out very attractive slogans with very striking color combinations.  These t-shirts in themselves were vote-catchers.

The same thing did not happen during the presidential polls of 2008 in the USA.  Barack Obama t-shirts were very prominent and very popular among the voters, party workers, and supporters.  Majority of these t-shirts carried photographs of Obama along with his name in matching colors and styles.  Also, there were some election t-shirts that had some humorous messages alongside the images of Barack Obama.  However, the idea of sporting these t-shirts were almost same.

The election t-shirts are made use of to collect funds and disseminate information regarding voting.  They may have messages for voters to attend to voting on Election Day and carry other significant news to the voters easily.  Election t-shirts are usable for such good intentions.  This is one of the cheapest ways of securing votes at elections.

Now that election t-shirts have come to stay, it is advisable for candidates to find ways and means of making full use of them to promote their political campaigns in order to secure maximum votes possible.  Cost-wise, it is very profitable too.

Origins of HIV/AIDS

The discuss about HIV/AIDS origin has resurfaced recently due to new information that has come to light debunking old theories about when HIV originated in human populations. This new information came to us by way of DNA analysis of the current HIV virus. Scientists now guess that HIV jump to human populations from monkeys in the early 1900′s. This has helped to put to rest conspiracy theory about polio vaccines causing the transmission of HIV. HIV is thought to have jumped to the human population when indigenous African populations who consumed game meats regularly contracted it while butchering animals. A range of viruses that humans have today have been transmitted to us by animals, including the bird flu.

HIV 1 is the more virulent and common of the HIV strains. HIV 1 is the strain that infects most the world and qualifies HIV as a pandemic. HIV II is the less common strain of HIV that is less virulent. HIV 2 is mostly confined to West Africa, and not as prevalent. Both HIV 1 and HIV 2 are transmitted by bodily fluids. This means that the prevention of HIV rests on safe, and non risky practices. Including using condoms as well as other safe sex practices. AIDS occurs when HIV has progressed to the point as to promote opportunistic infections and other AIDS defining illnesses.

As treatments become more available the battle against HIV becomes more viable. Prevention needs to be a central pillar in combating HIV/AIDS, as well as aggressive treatment. HAART regimens (combinations of AIDS drugs) are the primary weapon we have and it has been very effective in slowing the progression of HIV. Breakthroughs like these have helped patients live a much longer and healthier life. A essential component in winning the fight against HIV is education, we need more HIV education. Misinformation and lack of understanding has been a huge contributer to the spread of HIV.

Election times are sometimes the most stressful time period in any country.Politicians are always trying to be on their best behavior during those times in an effort to  charm their constituents. And then there are the constituents themselves debaint over which candidate is the best pick from the lot. The events that happen in one country now do not just have the ability to affect the same country, but can also affect the state of affairs in another.Because of this the election results in one country are carefully analysed by its neighboring states as well. After all the world has become a global village and to think the actions in one country will not affect the other is not even an argument anymore.

The recent election to vote for the new President of the United States had the whole world watching. It was one of those events that will come down in the history books as, for the first time, there was an African American running for Presidency in a country where until 40 years ago, African Americans were not given equal rights. The election results that were announced after this election had not just Americans, but people the whole world over, feel like finally there was going to be a change for the better. The election results announced were met with a feeling of both excitement and concern as it came at a time when the world was faced with one of the worst financial crises of recent history. This change has pervaded the lives of people in other countries as well, and they have started to believe that the same can happen in their own countries.

There are similar election results that can have an equally profound impact on the world. The recent, and much publicized elections held in Iraq was one such election, as it ushered in teh new regime to the country.Although not the perfect election, it was nevertheless an indicator that new things were happening in the country.Election results herald in news of what the future of a country is going to be.
