The question here is for the Republicans, because whether or not the Democrats thought Powell’s decision was forthcoming they now hold a major trump card they do not need to question.

What does this mean for Sen. Obama? Moreover, what does it mean for Sen. McCain? Get aboard my “straight-talk” express, because the writing is on the wall and not even a prognostic, political pundit can alter it. The war veteran and his “GOP strategy”, Gov. Sarah Palin-who, ironically was featured on the September 15, 2008 cover of Newsweek with a rifle slung across her shoulder-need to hang up their guns. The battle is over! Frankly, it won’t surprise me one bit if President Bush decides to endorse Sen. Obama, since many Republicans have become very disappointed in McCain, primarily in his choice for running mate.

So will the Supreme Court take up the question of the healthcare bills constitutionality? We might want to refer that question to the birthers who after enduring almost two years of public ridicule are still looking for one honest judge to give them and the American public the right to glance at the real Obama birth certificate. The BC is only one of about twenty or so other documents about Obama’s past that remain mysteriously albeit conspicuously missing from anything that might be construed as an open and public record on Mr. Transparency.

So is the new Supreme Court an important constitutional change that will endow our courts with a greater sense of independence and a strengthened role in protecting the rights of individuals?

Or is it a costly re-branding of an institution that was working perfectly well and needed no tinkering?

Only time will tell.

Heven’t they Heard we have a Recession On?

When many people need money now, a report by USA Today about federal salaries shows a huge increase in the number of federal employees making over 6 figures. Looking at the numbers, it would seem that these workers are not feeling the effects of the recession at all.

Employees that used to make $ 100,000 or more got an increase between 14 and 19 percent, and that’s before bonuses or overtime. That’s an awful lot of money for those that already are well off – and at a time when more people are hurting than ever.

And the Rich Get …Well, You Know the Rest

The number of civilian employees in the Defense Department earning $ 150,000 salaries increased from 1,868 at the end of 2007 to 10,100 in June of the current year. This news can be hard to swallow at a time when millions of Americans have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meets. Many of those people would love to be working but just cannot find even a basic job.

Conversely, federal hires have been increasing over the last few months. In the last 18 months, the Transportation Department has bumped 1,689 people to over $ 170,000 – compared to only ONE person earning that before now.

But does it End There?

Perhaps this would be easier to stomach if this were the extent of it. The truth is that the entire federal government is raising salaries, which is asinine considering we have a record deficit and debt. Six figure salaries are less common in these areas. Meanwhile in the rest of the country we desperately need money now.

How Do They Explain it?

According to government affairs director for the Federal Managers Association, Jessica Klement, these government employees are working in areas that require a great deal of training and skill, and they are working for far less than they would make at similar private jobs. The USA Today reports that Klement said these workers, according to Klement, made 26 percent less than counterparts in the private sector.

Is this Bogus?

USA Today went on to assess the federal worker salary data from the Office of Personnel Management (excluding workers in the White House, Congress, the Postal Service, intelligence agencies and uniformed military personnel). The study found the average private sector salary was $ 41, 331, and average federal pay was $ 71, 206.

Shocking, but True

For the majority of Americans who really need money now, this is going to be some tough news to hear. The last administration approved raises of 3 percent in January of 2008, and 3.9 percent in January of 2009 across the board for federal employees. The recommendation of President Obama is to take this down to 2 percent for the beginning of 2010, which may still sound high but is actually the lowest increase since 1975. These hikes,among other raises and some modified pay systems, have contributed to these amazing salary increases.

The health care debate rages on and on and I’m wondering if anyone really cares much anymore. It’s basically you and me against the corporate insurance world, Big Pharma and their lobbyists. Anything that has a snowball’s chance of passing both the House and Senate is likely to be some watered-down reform that almost certainly will not be any godsend to the American people. That’s if anything passes at all.

Many Republicans call it socialism. Well, many of these naysaying politicians have no problem with the premium socialized medical insurance and drug benefits they enjoy. They just don’t want you and I to have the same perks. Did you know that Congressmen enjoy their own on-site walk-in clinic staffed with doctors and nurses right there on Capitol Hill? They pay around $500 a year for this service. We’d be lucky to pay $500 a month.

It’s always struck me that in a country so incredibly wealthy as ours, everybody could and should be covered by decent health care. I believe it is our right, not a privilege. Why not just expand Medicare to cover us all? It will never happen, but something has to change. Medicare is the gigantic white elephant in the room because if things progress the way they are, every dollar of government money will eventually go toward caring for us, the aging Baby Boomers. The rate of Alheimer’s Disease alone is skyrocketing and doubling every 15 years or so.

Health care for one and all would surely save a fantastic sum of money in the long run. The scores of millions without insurance often wait until they are in dire straits, then go to the only health care provider left to them: the emergency departments of hospitals all around our once great land. That is, by far, the very most expensive health care known to mankind. If these folks were covered, they would tend to get care earlier on in their disease cycle and have a much better chance of recovery at far greater savings than is now possible for them. Also, they might be more inclined to seek preventative care, again at much greater savings.

I fear, heck I’m conceding, that whatever may pass as health care reform will continue to fatten the already plump insurance industry and Big Pharma (remember Bush’s great trillion-dollar boondoggle giveaway with his maniacal Medicare prescription drug plans and all the subsequent confusion that followed?). There are just too many competing parties for this to ever give the American people what they so rightly deserve: decent health care and medicines at affordable prices.

There’s always the agrument that government will only botch things up. Well, what about Medicare and Social Security? Those have seemed to be pretty successful programs, to put it mildly. I am reminded of a placard my father saw at one of the Tea Party rallies on TV that said: “Get government out of Medicare!” Well, if it weren’t for the government, we wouldn’t even have Medicare! This kind of ignorance by those who would benefit most is simply mind-boggling. But, the fear mongers out there, the talking heads who want to scare you out of what would be in your best interests by using the “S” word, Socialism, are only looking to line their own pockets and those of their constituents who contribute so heavily to politicians’ campaigns.

I wonder what it’s going to take to really make a difference in health care reform? Just stay healthy?! Maybe we could get vouchers for fruits and vegetables and a tax break if we quit smoking and drinking.
